This
summer, 34 high school students and 5 teachers spent June 2006 in the U.S.
as part of the Indonesian Youth
Leadership Program (IYLP.) Participants came from 17 high
schools from across Indonesia and included Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and
Muslim youths, which allowed for an added element of interfaith dialogue. While
staying at Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, the
group enjoyed workshops on the rights and responsibilities of citizens in
a democracy, as well as leadership training initiatives. They joined
local non-profit organizations for community service, hiked in the Blue
Ridge Mountains, attended a Minor League baseball game, and toured
Washington, DC.
IYLP
is an exchange program for Indonesian high school students and teachers
who spend one month in the U.S. each July. Students study about democracy
and civic education, meet American families and learn to work together as
teams to find solutions to public policy issues.
