D. EXPIRATION DATE MUST BE MARKED

  1. The label of the foods listed below must bear the date of minimum durability (EXPIRATION DATE):
  • Pasteurized milk
  • Sterilized milk
  • Fermented milk
  • Dried milk/ Milk powder
  • Food and beverages containing milk
  • Baby food
  • Commercial sterilized canned food
  • Bread, biscuits and bread type products
  • Low calorie food
  • Nutrient supplement food
  • Cocoa and cocoa products
  • Nut and nut products
  • Edible fat and oil
  • Margarine
  • Peanut butter
  • Egg products
  • Sausage
  • Soft drinks (non-carbonated)
  • Juice

  1. Determination of the date of minimum durability:
  • The producer shall determine the date of minimum durability which indicate that the product will meet the quality requirements until that date.
  • In determining the date marking, the producer shall take the following matters into considerations:
          - type of food
          - method of processing
          - the nature of the packaging and technique used
          - the required storage condition
          - the availability of the storage facility at the distribution areas.

  1. The producer must give the reasons or data which can support the date of minimum durability of the products.

  1. The producer or the importer is responsible for the date of minimum durability stated on the label of the products.

  1. The method of stating the date marking and the notice:
  • Must be declared in DAY, MONTH and YEAR for food with a shelf-life of a maximum of 3 months, and shall be declared in MONTH and YEAR for food with shelf-life of more than 3 months.
  • The date can be stated on the closure of the bottle, the bottom of a can, on the upper part of a box and other suitable places, must be clear and readily legible.
  • The label must also state a readily legible notice, as follow:
          "Use best before …………" (fill in date of minimum durability).
