PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT : INDONESIA
December 27, 2004
This Public Announcement is issued to inform United States citizens
that the northern parts of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and
particularly the province of Aceh, suffered severe damage following an
earthquake and series of tsunami waves on December 26, 2004. The
Government of Indonesia has declared a National Disaster and has
mobilized civilian and military assistance to the affected areas.
Communications infrastructure, roads, medical care and tourist
facilities on the western and northern coasts of Sumatra, and on
coastal islands off Sumatra, have been damaged and in some cases
completely destroyed. More than 4,700 people have been killed in
Indonesia, mainly in Aceh. The Government of Indonesia continues to
restrict foreigners' travel to Aceh. This Public Announcement expires
January 28, 2005.
The Department of State continues to urge Americans to defer all
non-essential travel to Indonesia. Americans are encouraged to read
the December 17, 2004 Travel Warning for Indonesia at http://travel.state.gov/travel/indonesia_warning.html.
U.S. citizens who travel to Indonesia are encouraged to register with
the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta or the U.S. Consular Agency in Bali
through the State Department's travel registration website at https://travelregistration.state.gov.
U.S. citizens may also obtain up-to-date information on security
