U.S. Embassy Statement -- The United States is not
Threatening an Embargo
October 2, 2000
(Jakarta). The U.S. Embassy is concerned about statements by
Indonesian officials, as reported in the Indonesian media, alleging
that the U.S. is considering imposing an economic embargo on
Indonesia. The Embassy wishes to clarify that no U.S. Government
official has suggested that the U.S. is considering an embargo; it is
not United States Government policy.
The U.S. Embassy is also deeply concerned by references in the
Indonesian media to a possible expropriation of U.S. companies in
Indonesia. Such statements by Indonesian officials are irresponsible
and harmful to both U.S.-Indonesian relations and the overall
investment climate in Indonesia. For additional information, please
contact the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy, at 344-2211, x
2566. * * *
