OVERVIEWThe Public Affairs Section conducts the Embassy's
information and cultural programs. A Regional English
Language Officer based in Jakarta supports
English-teaching activities throughout Indonesia and the
region. The Information Resource Center, formerly known
as Zorinsky Research and Information Service (ZoRIS), a
state-of-the-art research facility, contributes to the
Public Affairs programs. Fulbright Educational Exchanges
are administered by a bi-national commission known as
AMINEF, the American-Indonesian Exchange Foundation.
AMINEF also operates an Educational Advising Service
(EAS), which provides information and counseling for
students interested in studying in the United States.
AMINEF and the EAS are located in the Balai Pustaka
building, about 1 mile east of the Embassy. INFORMATION SECTIONPress ActivitiesThe Information Office coordinates the Embassy's media
contacts. The Information Office issues press releases on
U.S. Government policy, key addresses by U.S. Government
officials, and events with a bilateral impact. In
addition, releases on developments in international
trade, foreign affairs, science and technology, and the
environment are sent to the media. PublicationsThe Public Affairs Section distributes publications on
economics and trade, security, democracy, the media,
human rights, the environment and American society and

Publication Translation Program helps Indonesian
publishing houses translate and publish books by American
authors in these key subject areas. Over 100 titles have
been published or are currently in production. TelevisionThe Public Affairs Section works with the Indonesian
government network, TVRI, commercial networks RCTI,
Indosiar, ANTeve and SCTV, and the educational channel, TPI, LaTivi, the TV news
channel, MetroTV, to encourage and support coverage of appropriate
Embassy events. Several stations regularly use the Public
Affairs Section-produced or acquired programming. U.S. State Dept./International Information Program's
Worldnet satellite television interactives are a popular
and effective program medium to present and explain U.S.
policy on critical issues and explore htmlects of American
society. The Public Affairs Section regularly
participates in interactive programs. CULTURAL OFFICECultural and Educational ProgramsThe Public Affairs Section administers a variety of
cultural and educational programs focused on topics of
bilateral interest, usually in cooperation with
appropriate Indonesian institutions. As an example, an
annual economic seminar has been jointly sponsored by The
Public Affairs Section and the Indonesian Economists
Association (ISEI) since 1989. In the exchanges field,
Indonesian grantees visit the U.S. under various
auspices, including the International Visitor Program,
visits arranged through the Office of Citizen Exchanges,
and programs related to the Study of the U.S. American-Indonesian Exchange Foundation (AMINEF)A bilateral agreement was signed on July 15, 1992 by then Ambassador John C. Monjo and Foreign Minister Ali Alatas. This marked the culmination of years of intensive effort to establish a fully binational Fulbright Commission (the American-Indonesian Exchange Foundation, AMINEF) to administer The Fulbright Program. The Fulbright Program has operated in Indonesia since 1952, with gratifying results. The Program sends Indonesians to the U.S. annually for graduate, research, or to teach at U.S. universities. The Fulbright Program also brings to Indonesia American senior lecturers, senior researchers, and doctoral-level student researchers. AMINEF also administers the Hubert Humphrey North-South Fellowship Program, a non-degree program for mid-career professional. The Educational Advising Service (EAS) provides
information and advising services to about 20,000 people
per year. Staffed in part by American volunteers, the EAS
enables students to receive personal counseling for a
small fee and conducts orientation programs for students
planning to study in the U.S. American StudiesThe promotion of study about the U.S. is a key facet
of The Public Affairs Section programming. There are
graduate degree-granting American Studies programs at the
University of Indonesia in Jakarta and Gadjah Mada
University in Yogyakarta, as well as undergraduate
programs at Diponegoro University in Semarang,
Universitas Sebelas Maret in Solo, and The Teacher
Training Institute in Manado. Various universities
throughout Indonesia teach a wide range of American
studies courses. The Public Affairs Section supports
American Studies programs through donation of books and
materials, workshops by American Specialists, placement
of American Fulbright lecturers, and grants for
short-term visits to the U.S. The Public Affairs Section
also cooperates with the American Studies Association of
Indonesia in a biennial American Studies conference. The
Public Affairs Section organizes American Studies
seminars outside of Jakarta, aimed primarily at academics
teaching about the U.S. or seeking to add an American
component to their teaching programs. The Information Resource Center (IRC)The Information Resource Center (IRC), formerly known as the Zorinsky Research and Information Service (ZoRIS), a sophisticated state-of-the-art research and information service, is located at the Embassy. The IRC provides authoritative information on U.S. Government policy, legislation and social issues to key Indonesian decision makers and opinion leaders. The IRC also functions as a centralized information hub for the U.S. Mission. The primary IRC outreach tool is the "Article Alert" which offers selected articles on various topics to Indonesian readers. In addition to a collection of approximately 1,000
reference books and 30 hard copy journals, the IRC has
access on-line access to various databases. The IRC also
maintains the American Embassy Home Page at PAS has initiated the American Corner in 2002 as partnerships between the U.S. Embassy and host institutions or the universities in Indonesia. The American Corner, first launched in Indonesia on March 18, 2004 at the Islamic State University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah, Ciputat, Jakarta, is a way of reaching out to university populations and the general public in Jakarta. As of today, there are ten American Corners affiliated with universities across the country. American Corners provide access to current and reliable information about the political, economic, cultural, educational and social life in the U.S. via book collections, the Internet, and through local programming to the general public. American Corners serve as an information outpost similar to a public library reference service, specializing in a collection of books in English about the U.S. which include reference titles, works of fiction, business and government publications. They also provide access to U.S. information through supervised Internet access, audio and video products, CDs, CD-ROMS, and EbscoHost database. The United States has a long-standing commitment to spread the ideas and values of American democracy and civil society to foreign audiences and to engage and maintain an open dialogue with people throughout the world. The goal of the American Corners is to bring the true story of the United States to the people, counteract negative preconceptions, maintain an open dialogue, and build bridges of understanding. The Ten American Corners are: English TeachingEnglish is the officially designated primary foreign language of Indonesia and is widely taught throughout the country. A working knowledge of English is required for university-level study in many disciplines, for Indonesian government employees in certain offices and programs, and for employees in commerce, banking and tourism industries. The Regional English Language Officer (RELO) provides consultations and teacher training throughout Indonesia and in other countries of the region. The RELO emphasizes conference presentations, workshops, seminars, consultations, and other forms of in-service teacher training for Indonesian English programs. The RELO incorporates The Public Affairs Section's tools such as Worldnet interactives, telepress audio conferences, Academic Specialists and publications to promote Indonesian teacher education. The RELO facilitates American publishers' entree into the Indonesian textbook market (including electronic learning media such as CD-ROMs) through promotions and workshops with Indonesian educators and publishers. The RELO office contains a small resource library of classroom and teacher-training materials. English Teaching Forum magazine is extensively used by English teachers throughout Indonesia. Other English teaching materials from U.S. State Dept./International Information Programs and American publishers are available through the RELO at a modest cost. |
