| The Navy's USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group was diverted from Hong Kong December 29 along with four other ships in its group to the Gulf of Thailand. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will help provide humanitarian assistance and support to victims of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunamis that killed tens of thousands December 26 in at least 12 nations around the Indian Ocean region. A senior U.S. military officer said that ultimately the carrier group will be stationed off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island where the earthquake occurred. The carrier group brings 12 helicopters that will be used in reconnaissance, recovery and assistance efforts. The carrier group is part of a greater U.S. humanitarian effort to support those nations hardest hit by the earthquake and the tsunamis. (© AP/WWP) | |||||||||||
