PRESS RELEASE

U.S. Embassy Statement on the Letter to President SBY
from 40 Elected Members of the U.S. Congress

Jakarta, August 9 - The United States Government continues to fully support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Indonesia and does not support independence movements in any part of Indonesia, including in Papua.

We encourage the Government of Indonesia to fully implement law No. 21/2001 on Special Autonomy for Papua and West Papua.  Implementation of the law would help to eliminate a source of some Papuans’ grievances against the central government. The United States is working with the Government of Indonesia and the provincial governments of Papua and West Papua to find ways to address the key developmental and environmental challenges, including health, education and environmental protection.

Furthermore, we continue to engage the Government of Indonesia on the protection and promotion of human rights, including increasing accountability for past human rights abuses.
