U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates Visits Indonesia

U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates visited Jakarta as part of a nine-day trip around the world reinforcing military relationships with key U.S. allies.  On his one-day visit to Indonesia, Secretary Gates met with high-level Indonesian defense officials; was received by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono; and delivered a key foreign policy speech to the Indonesian Council on World Affairs. 

Secretary Gates met with his counterpart, Indonesia’s Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono, at the Indonesian Ministry of Defense.  They discussed the sale US military equipment to Indonesia.  Defense assistance from the United States underscores the U.S. Government’s interest in assisting Indonesia improve its military capacity.   

After leaving the Defense Ministry, Secretary Gates was received by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Presidential Palace.  In meeting with the Indonesian president, Secretary Gates reinforced the importance of military-to-military relations between the U.S. and Indonesia. 

Lastly, Secretary Gates delivered a key foreign policy speech, America, Indonesia and the New Security Architecture of Asia, to the Indonesian Council on World Affairs (ICWA) at the Four Seasons Hotel.  In his remarks, Gates focused on the changing security environment in Asia, and on the U.S. desire to see increased cooperation among its allies and partners.
