January 15, 2008 Jakarta, January 15 – In partnership with Kompas Gramedia, U.S. Embassy Jakarta launched an opening event for a unique American photography exhibit titled “Sacred Legacy: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian,” at Gramedia’s Bentara Budaya today. The sixty-print exhibition by photographer/ethnographer Edward S. Curtis celebrates the history and culture of indigenous North Americans, and illustrates their broad and extraordinary diversity. The photographs at the exhibit were selected from the private collection of Christopher G. Cardozo, the world’s foremost expert on Edward S. Curtis. This exhibition was created expressly for the United States Department of State, and has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Asia, Europe, and South America. The principal goal of the sixty-print exhibition is to celebrate Native American peoples, and their history and culture. The photography exhibit in Jakarta is open to the public at Bentara Budaya from January 16 to January 29, 2008. From February 19 to February 29, the exhibit will be held in Bandung at the Institut Teknologi Bandung. From March 3 to March 19, the exhibit will move to Medan at Sun Plaza. Finally, the exhibit will be held from March 23 to March 30 in Palembang at Palembang Square. More information is available at the U.S. Embassy website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov/SacredLegacy.html, or by calling the Public Affairs Section at 3435-9500.
