U.S. Ambassador Hosts “Super Tuesday” U.S. Election Event

Jakarta, February 6 -- U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume hosted an open house at his residence to watch the “Super Tuesday” presidential primary election results.  Invited guests included Indonesian government officials, members of parliament, professors, students, NGO representatives, members of Indonesian and American business communities and members of the diplomatic corps. The invitees watched the primary election results in real time on televisions located throughout the residence.  

In addition to watching U.S. primary returns, the event featured a variety of election-related activities, including mock primaries, lectures, and a quiz where participants could demonstrate their knowledge of the U.S. electoral system.  Guests were given blank paper ballots and candidate position papers, and were encouraged to choose the Republican or Democratic candidate of their choice.  Participants even got to cast their vote in American-style ballot boxes. 

Another highlight of the event was a lecture by former U.S. Congressman Michael J. Kopetski during which he talked about running for political office and serving as a representative in Congress for three terms.  

February 5, 2008 is known as “Super Tuesday” because a large number of states hold their nominating contests that day. These states are spread across the country and represent a diverse set of states including California, New York, Missouri and North Dakota.  With so many elections on the same day, “Super Tuesday” often makes or breaks a candidacy, and presidential candidates have to campaign simultaneously in over 20 states.  While many states in the 2008 campaign season will hold their races on February 5, there is no guarantee that the nominees will be known by that evening.
