June 23, 2009 U.S. Awards Grant to Enhance Indonesian Aviation Safety Jakarta – The U. S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded $341,000 in grant funds to Indonesia’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to enhance the safety, security and operational integrity of the country’s aviation sector. The grant will strengthen DGCA’s oversight capabilities by funding an assessment of the Directorate’s current capabilities and recommend improvements to enhance effectiveness as an independent aviation safety regulator. The regulatory improvements will foster continued growth in Indonesia’s aviation sector. U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume and DGCA Director General Herry Bakti signed the $341,000 grant agreement at a ceremony today at the Ministry of Transportation in Jakarta. “Indonesia’s aviation industry is vital to its economic growth,” Ambassador Hume said. “The United States is pleased to partner with DGCA in strengthening Indonesia’s aviation sector and promoting safety by improving its regulatory operations.” The USTDA grant will fund a review of the DGCA’s current operations and make recommendations to strengthen its regulatory authority. The work supports Indonesia’s efforts to meet international standards and develop a strong aviation oversight system. The technical assistance will help DGCA make the necessary reforms to overcome regulatory barriers and continue to foster the growth of the civil aviation market in Indonesia. The USTDA advances economic development and U.S. commercial interests in developing and middle-income countries. The agency funds various forms of technical assistance, early investment analysis, training, orientation visits and business workshops that support the development of a modern infrastructure and a fair and open trading environment.
