Burma Conference Opens in Jakarta

A two-day international conference on “The Role of ASEAN Civil Society in Supporting Human Rights and Democracy in Burma” opened March 6, 2008 in Jakarta. The meeting was attended by some 100 NGO leaders and experts. Speakers included U Awbata, a Burmese monk who was involved in Burma’s September 2007 pro-democracy uprising. The conference was organized by Human Rights Working Group – Indonesia’s Coalition of NGOs on International Human Rights Advocacy – Kontra S, and the Indonesian Coalition for Burma (KMSUB). The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, the National Democratic Institute (NDI), and UNI Apro provided support. President Bush has said “the situation in Burma remains deplorable” and “concerted international pressure is needed to achieve a genuine transition to democracy in Burma.”
