U.S. Embassy Hosts “Amerikaku?” Documentary Film Event

Bahasa Indonesia

Jakarta, May 19 – The U.S. Embassy hosted a gala, Hollywood-style film premiere for the documentary, “Amerikaku?,” at Blitz Megaplex in Grand Indonesia Mall.  Guests at the event included prominent Indonesians educated in the U.S., leaders in the fields of education and government, as well as celebrities. Produced by the U.S. Embassy and directed by Mirwan Suwarso, “Amerikaku?” features four high school students from different parts of Indonesia who live and study in the U.S. It will be broadcast as a multi-part series on national Indonesian television later this year.

“When Secretary Clinton visited Jakarta in February, she spoke a great deal about the value of exchanges, and of having Americans and Indonesians get to know each other on a personal level,” U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume told guests. “She also expressed the hope that we will have more interactions between our two countries, and noted that people to people exchanges are the best thing to break down barriers between nations.”

Every year, the U.S. Embassy sends approximately 100 Indonesian high school students to study in the U.S. each year on the YES (Youth Exchange and Study) Program. Run in cooperation with Bina Antar Budaya, the Indonesian Foundation for Intercultural Learning, the YES students live with American host families, attend high school, engage in activities to learn about American society and values, acquire leadership skills, and help educate Americans about their countries and cultures.

Featuring a red carpet arrival, MCs Uli Herdinansyah and Melissa Karim greeted VIP guests, including Nirina, Venna Melinda, Tantowi Yahya and Gilang Ramadhan, Anjasmara, Jeremy Thomas, and Ferry Salim.  Guests were photographed with a President Barack Obama look-alike for a souvenir photo and during the pre-screening reception a musical set was performed by the band “Cokelat.” Beverages for the event were donated by Coca-Cola and Starbucks.

The four Indonesian students featured in the documentary are Nindie Silvy and Mista Sugesty from Banda Aceh, Annisa Devi from Jepara and Waskito Jati from Jogjakarta.
