October 4, 2007 New USAID Director Continues Buka Puasa Tradition
with Orphans JAKARTA – Honoring the holy month of Ramadan, the U.S. Embassy continued its tradition of celebrating buka puasa – the breaking of the fast – at an orphanage in Jakarta . Walter North, the newly - arrived Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Indonesia, shared a Ramadan meal with the orphans of The Marhamah Foundation, an orphanage located on Jl. Cipinang Cempedak I No. 11, in East Jakarta on 4th October 2007. In his remarks to the children, Mr. North stressed the importance of education. He also enjoyed a conversation with the orphans in which they discussed values shared by both Indonesians and Americans during the holiday season. The orphanage was founded by Orni Loebis and Abdul Manan in 1989, and currently houses 73 underprivileged boys of 13 to 18 years of age with 20 staff caring for its residents. The orphanage has a longstanding relationship with the U.S. Embassy through USAID-implementing partner Mercy Corps, which has been providing food assistance at Marhamah and several hundred other institutions since 2000. USAID provides Marhamah with donations including vegetable oil and green peas to improve the nutritional status of the orphans. # # # |
