U.S. Launches “Democracy Video Challenge”

Bahasa Indonesia

U.S. Department of State is asking citizens around the world -- including Indonesia -- to express what democracy means to them personally in a short video.

The “Democracy Video Challenge” is a competition for the best video completing the phrase “Democracy is…” Winners receive an all-expense paid trip to the U.S.  to visit Washington, D.C., New York City, and Hollywood to screen their winning videos, get exposure to the U.S. film and television industry, as well as meet with democracy advocates from the government, the media and civil society.  All submissions are due by January 31, 2009.

Participants in this video challenge must be 18 or older to enter. Videos can be any style: fiction or documentary, animated or live action, but they must be no longer than three minutes. The videos must be in English, or have English subtitles. Contestants may enter anonymously, but anonymous winners cannot collect the grand prize. To enter, please go to: http://www.youtube.com/democracychallenge.

“Democracy Video Challenge” semifinalists will be selected during the months of February and March 2009. An independent jury will narrow down the semifinalists to 21 finalists during April 2009. The general public will vote online for the winning videos from May 15 to June 15, 2009. Seven winners (one each from the Western Hemisphere, Europe, Middle East-North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South & Central Asia, East Asia-Pacific and one anonymous winner) will be announced in June 2009. In October 2009, the six publicly identified winners, one from each of the six geographic regions, will travel to the United States to claim their prize.
