United States to Provide US$25 Million for Battle against Avian Influenza

JAKARTA-11 September: The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $25 million to assist the Government of Indonesia’s (GOI) avian influenza control and pandemic preparedness programs. The announcement was made yesterday during the GOI Meeting with International Key Partners on Avian Influenza and Pandemic Preparedness taking place this week in Bali .

The United States ’ comprehensive program for avian influenza – administered by USAID – supports the Government of Indonesia’s National Strategy for Avian Influenza Control and Preparedness for Human Pandemic Influenza 2006-2008 through the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture. The U.S. $25 million will support the GOI top three strategic priorities of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Control in Poultry, Epidemiological Surveillance for AI in animals and humans, and Risk Communications and Behavior Change Communications to combat the spread of avian influenza.

The USAID-supported Avian Influenza program is active in every district in Bali, Java, and North Sumatra Province . USAID also supports the Indonesian National Committee for Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (KOMNAS – FPBI).

The USAID assistance program is implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization, Development Alternatives Incorporated, John Snow, Inc. and the International Livestock Research Institute.
