U.S. to Provide Emergency Assistance to Jakarta and
Surrounding
Area Flood Victims
February 5, 2007
Bahasa
Indonesia
The United States Government will provide US$100,000 in emergency
relief assistance for flood-ravaged Jakarta and surrounding communities.
Five days of torrential rains have caused severe flooding throughout the
area.
The U.S. donation – made through the United States Agency for
International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance – will
be provided to displaced persons in several areas in Jakarta whose homes
have been inundated by flood waters; reportedly hundreds of thousands of
people are displaced and at least 20 have died as a result of the
flooding.
The US assistance will be provided to the International Federation of
Red Cross (IFRC) and its local partner, the Indonesian Red Cross/Palang
Merah Indonesia (PMI), CARE, Mercy Corps, and World Vision to support
emergency response efforts and provide emergency supplies, hygiene kits,
plastic sheets, jerry cans, cooking utensils and sleeping mats.
The governments of the U.S. and Indonesia recently signed several
agreements totaling US$963 million in assistance over the next five
years for programs that support Indonesia ’s democratic transition,
economic growth, educational reform and the delivery of basic human
services. USAID also provides significant humanitarian and food
assistance for internally displaced persons and victims of natural
disasters.
