Dr. Yusuf  Djadjadihardja, a senior official* from the Agency for Assessment of Application of Technology (BPPT) and Dr. Chris Goldfinger, a senior researcher* from the Oregon State University (OSU) today signed an agreement for a joint paleoseismologic study of the Sunda subduction zone beneath the Sunda Strait. The objective of this joint Indonesian-U.S. research project is to determine the history of great earthquakes and tsunami along the Sumatra and Java coasts.

U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires John Heffern remarked: “This project continues the important cooperation between Indonesia and the United States on potential tsunami and earthquake related natural disasters embodied in our November 2006 Multihazards Memorandum of Understanding.”

Scientists from Indonesia and the U.S. will conduct the expedition aboard the U.S.-flagged vessel R/V Roger Revelle from May 7 to June 14, 2007. The 32-member scientific team will include at least eight scientists from Indonesia. The Indonesian and U.S. scientists will collaborate closely on the analysis of the findings from the cruise.
