USAID and ConocoPhillips Sign $1 Million Agreement
for Education Recovery in Earthquake-Affected
Central Java and Yogyakarta
January 19, 2007
Bahasa Indonesia
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and
ConocoPhillips Indonesia entered into a public-private alliance today to
restore high quality education services in earthquake-affected areas of
Central Java and Yogyakarta . ConocoPhillips Indonesia is providing $1
million to directly support the rehabilitation or reconstruction of 22
elementary and junior secondary schools, working hand-in-hand with local
communities, educators, and government officials. The funds will be
channeled through USAID’s Decentralized Basic Education (DBE) program
implemented by Research Triangle Institute (RTI), Education Development
Center (EDC) and Save the Children.
The alliance supports the Government of Indonesia’s plan to assist in
restoring people’s lives in the aftermath of the earthquake. In addition
to school reconstruction, the program will also provide necessary
teaching and learning materials, furnishings, books, and other items to
allow schools to resume full operations. Joining ConocoPhillips
Indonesia President & General Manager William L. Bullock Jr. and USAID
Mission Director William M. Frej at the signing ceremony in Jakarta were
U.S. Ambassador B. Lynn Pascoe and ConocoPhillips Executive Vice
President of Exploration and Production for Europe, Asia, Africa and the
Middle East William B. Berry. Ambassador Pascoe stated that “This
partnership between USAID and ConocoPhillips reflects the continued
commitment of the U.S. government and corporate sector to improve the
lives of those affected by last year’s devastating earthquake in Central
Java and Yogyakarta .”
USAID and ConocoPhillips previously worked together to support
community recovery in Aceh following the 2004 tsunami. USAID Mission
Director William M. Frej commented that “We are pleased to once again
partner with ConocoPhillips. Investing in people through improved
education services will help create conditions for long-term economic
growth in Indonesia .” The USAID-ConocoPhillips alliance complements the
U.S. government’s overall U.S. assistance partnership with Indonesia
aimed at tackling critical development challenges in areas such as
education, health, environment, economic growth and democracy.
