U.S. Embassy Warden Message - 17 October 2007 Print

U.S. Embassy Warden Message
October 17, 2007

Americans living and traveling in Indonesia are urged to avoid traveling to or within six miles of Mount Kelud. An evacuation order has been announced for all people living within six miles of Mount Kelud.  Indonesian authorities ordered the evacuation on Tuesday, October 16, warning of an imminent eruption from the volcano that killed thousands in 1919. Kelud has been rumbling for weeks, and it was placed on the highest alert level, meaning scientists believe a major eruption is imminent. It is not known if any eruption of Mount Kelud will affect the mud flow situation in Sidoarjo.  Extra caution should be exercised if traveling near this site.

Americans living and traveling in Indonesia are urged to register and update their contact information with the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya, or U.S. Consular Agency in Bali.  Registration facilitates the U.S. Mission’s contact with Americans in emergency situations, and may be done online and in advance of travel.  Information on registering can be found at the U.S. Department of State’s Consular Affairs website at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/ and at the Embassy’s website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov/consular/ACSREGISTER.html. All Travel Warnings, Public Announcements and recent warden messages are posted on the Embassy website.

Travel Warning - October 5, 2007 Print

Tue Oct 09 10:29:17 2007.

This Travel Warning updates information concerning the security situation in Indonesia and urges American citizens to evaluate carefully the risks of travel to that country. This Travel Warning supersedes the January 9, 2007. Travel Warning for Indonesia.

Due to the possibility of terrorist attacks directed against American or other Western citizens and interests, the Department of State urges American citizens to evaluate carefully the risks of travel to Indonesia. The October 1, 2005, terrorist attacks in Bali, in which suicide bombers killed 20 people and injured more than 100, are a reminder that terrorists remain active in Indonesia. Similarly, during the three prior years, there were three significant terrorist attacks in Indonesia, two in Jakarta and one in Bali. During 2007, the Indonesian police and security forces disrupted a number of cells linked with Jemaah Islamiyah, a U.S. Department of State-designated foreign terrorist organization. The existence of additional cells intending to carry out future attacks in Bali, Jakarta, or other areas of Indonesia cannot be ruled out.
