The United States Embassy in Jakarta announces that 35 Indonesians will take part in a specially designed Masters degree program in Applied Economics at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.

This unique 15-month program, which is funded by the U. S. Government through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide an opportunity for participants to develop their expertise in economic principles and analysis. The program is geared specifically for Indonesia, and places special emphasis on promoting an understanding of economic issues related to decentralization.

"You represent the Indonesia of the future," said Bappenas Chairman Djunaedi Hadisoemarto, addressing the students at a send-off ceremony in late May. Program candidates come mainly from regional universities in Aceh, East Kalimantan, North Sulawesi and Papua. Other candidates come from Airlangga University, Brawijaya University, Hasanuddin University and the University of Indonesia as well as from staff positions of various government agencies and the DPR. A third of the candidates are women.

Chairman Djunaedi praised USAID for supporting this opportunity to develop in Indonesia "a coterie of leaders who understand the world and speak the same language - both literally and figuratively. And improved understanding leads to better outcomes."

Courses at the Andrew Young School of Public Policy at Georgia State University will be taught by professors knowledgeable about Indonesia, including Dean Roy Bahl, Professor Jorge Martinez, and Professor James Alm. Guest lecturers will include noteworthy Indonesians and Americans speaking on key Indonesian issues such as the environment, energy pricing, trade and investment, taxation and budgeting. Program participants will also have opportunities for first-hand learning through internships at local government offices.
